Well, gee, KU, thanks for COMPLETELY IGNORING...
Just filled out survey for dining services.  Gender options were only male and female, not even “I prefer not to disclose.” and there was absolutely nothing about accessibility.  Considering that the elevator pathway is almost always blocked by large racks, I think that’s something they need to think about….gahh.  KU, I am disappointed in you.

Mayor Bloomberg’s Top Five Reasons for Screwing...
m-o-ckup: “[Wheelchair accessible vehicle] suspension is much worse, so the average person riding in them finds them really uncomfortable.” Because, you know, when one thinks comfort, one thinks New York City Taxi Cab. Who wants to mess with that kind of luxury? “You just can’t take a wheelchair out into the street and try and hail a cab.” They’re banning wheelchairs on streets now?! “A...

If you're dressing up for Halloween today, please...
mylifeasafeminista: Just in case this isn’t self explanatory, let me give some examples of things to avoid: Racism - Costumes that attempt to represent another culture or race are offensive; you should definitely not be dressing up as a Native American, an Arab, a geisha, etc. Sexism and/or misogyny - If your costume in any way communicates the message that women are inferior or that violence...

Sooo..muuch..paaain
hip-hophippie: I have the sharpest pain in my right leg. It hurts sooo bad -___-’ [I wish I could take it off and leave it sitting around somewhere]. What makes it worse, is that I’ll have to carry books and walk a long distance to class AND its cold outside which will make complications even worse. I hate everything right now. oh how well I know that feeling.  *hugs* to you.

ayries: I mean the word ‘crazy’ makes me pretty uncomfortable at any time, but using it to refer to a character who is actually mentally ill? I mean. I’m used to people using it as a sort of generic insult or w/e. But with Azula people pretty obviously mean it to actually mean, you know, her mental illness, and that seems kinda a step above if you know what I mean. NEWSFLASH! Calling people...

Occupy/Decolonize & disability: some raw thoughts
queershoulder: Bayeria Friends, a genuine & earnest question: What are some ways for folks who can’t physically be at #occupyoakland & #occupysf to still pitch in/help out right now? Or ways for folks to pitch in that involve minimal physical presence (dropping supplies off but not staying out in the streets for a long time, for example)? Lefty politico friends, some genuine &...

Hyperbole and a Half: Adventures in Depression →
I’ve always wanted to not give a fuck. While crying helplessly into my pillow for no good reason, I would often fantasize that maybe someday I could be one of those stoic badasses whose emotions are mostly comprised of rock music and not being afraid of things. And finally - finally - after a lifetime of feelings and anxiety and more feelings, I didn’t have any feelings left. I had spent my...

I don't like complaining about my CP
Does baclofen work for you?  I’ve thought about going on it from time to time… cpmatters: This is exactly how I felt after trying out a medication (for Parkinson’s)… I stopped taking as it was ineffective. My biceps got so painful afterwards it scared me to make any sudden move (ex: jerking backward). I notice it still occurs from time to time… There was this one terrible moment...

Womanhood Beyond Wheels →
cpmatters: Let’s work together - Join Womanhood Beyond Wheels :) The crucial part of empowerment is to dare to empower ourselves, and to take steps to become integrated in new contexts within the society. It is important that many of us women with disabilities take active part in other organisations and movements. We all need to become good effective lobbyists, maybe using our various...

Occupy Autism Speaks →
One of the most important points Ari Ne’eman made, both in his keynote address at the AASCEND conference last weekend and in conversations we were both part of during the conference, is that people with autism and our families are best served by avoiding thinking ourselves as a niche community with needs that are completely distinct from the disability community in general. It makes no sense...

044. I'm a hypochondriac.
lythweird: Definition: pertaining to or suffering from hypochondria,  an excessive preoccupation with and worry about one’s health, usually focusing on some particular symptom, such as cardiac or gastric problems. Hypochondriacs become unduly alarmed about any physical symptoms they detect, no matter how minor the symptom may be. They are convinced that they have or are about to have a serious...

Changing the Framework: Disability Justice →
We cannot fight for liberation without a deep, clear understanding of disability, ableism and disability justice. The bodies of our communities are under siege by forces that leverage violence and ableism at every turn. Ableism is connected to all of our struggles because it undergirds notions of whose bodies are considered valuable, desirable and disposable. How do we build across our...

So yeah, I just basically was forced to lie on my application for the Best Buddies chapter on my campus.  It asked if you have an intellectual or developmental disability…….um, CP IS a developmental disability, all the websites I just looked at say so.  I clicked yes but then it tried to make me a buddy, i.e, one of the intellectually disabled people we are paired up with....

Even people who are against capitalist greed in theory, have usually not worked out that part of capitalism is valuing...
